After Losing by 3 Points or Fewer: NFL Teams the Following Week

A last-minute heartbreak feels like a turning point, but the next-week numbers say the market already treats a 1-3 point loss as the near coin flip it is.

Before

After an NFL team loses (or wins) by 1 to 3 points, how often does it win and cover its next game, and does the market price that next game correctly?

Every Sunday someone loses on a late field goal, and every Monday the narrative machine starts: bounce-back spot, hangover spot, sell-high spot. I wanted to know what actually happens the week after an NFL team loses or wins by 1 to 3 points, across 13,073 regular-season team-games from 1999-2025.

The headline answer is dull, and that is the point. After a 1-3 point loss, teams won 48.0% of 1,534 next games, close to the 49.9% average for every next game, and covered 49.3% of the time. This is the kind of backdrop I keep in mind before posting anything on my American football tips page, because a close loss tells you far less than it feels like it does.

Aftermath · 01The market prices narrow results almost exactly right

Each row pairs the no-margin closing price for the next game with the actual win rate. After a 1-3 point loss the market made teams 49.0% and they won 47.1% of 1,114 priced games. After a 1-3 point win, the price was 50.7% and the result 50.6%, which is about as close as this sport gets.

Look at the edges for contrast. After a 21+ point loss teams were priced at 40.7% and won 42.8%; after a 21+ point win they were priced at 59.8% and won 58.3%. Big margins move the number, and the number still lands near the outcome.

My read: the gap after a narrow loss sits well inside the ±2.9 range on that row. The books do not overreact to a missed kick, so there is no cheap bounce-back price to grab.

Aftermath · 02Cover rates hug 50% whatever happened last week

Against the closing spread, every bucket sits between 48.2% and 52.3%. The two highlighted bars are the close finishes: 49.3% after a 1-3 point loss and 48.2% after a 1-3 point win, the lowest bar on the chart.

The tallest bar belongs to teams coming off a 4-7 point win, at 52.3% of 1,496. That is interesting, not actionable, because the 95% ranges for groups this size run from ±2.5 to ±2.9 points. The spread reflects the small shift too: 0.4-point underdogs after a narrow loss, 0.3-point favourites after a narrow win.

One caveat I hold on to throughout: a 1-3 point result is mostly noise about team strength. That is exactly why the line barely moves and why these records cluster around even.

Aftermath · 03Venue and role split the narrow-loss crowd sharply

This is where I get situational. After a 1-3 point loss, teams at home next time won 52.2% of 789 but covered only 46.5%, a −10.9% spread return. Road teams won 43.6% of 745 yet covered 52.4%, flat at 0.0%.

The role split tells the same story. As next-game favourites these teams won 64.1% (fair odds −179) but covered 46.9%; as underdogs they won 33.1% and covered 51.3%. Teams that lost by 1-3 in overtime covered 51.6% of 265 next games, against 48.9% after a regulation loss.

The pattern leans toward the public paying a touch too much for the home or favourite bounce-back. But these rows are 265 to 1,269 games, with ranges of roughly ±4-8 points on the smaller splits, so I treat it as a tiebreaker, not a system.

Aftermath · 04Blindly backing close-game teams loses more than the margin

Flat stakes on every team the week after a 1-3 point loss returned −7.9% on the moneyline and −5.6% on the spread. After a 1-3 point win it was −2.7% and −7.8%. Compare that with the baseline of backing everyone in every next game: −3.2% and −4.4%, which is simply the cost of the margin.

The only green on the chart is the 4-7 point winners, at +2.7% on the moneyline and −0.1% on the spread. A one-score result with a bit more breathing room has been slightly underrated, but it is hardly a reason to bet blind.

What I take from it: a close finish is not a betting angle on its own. It is a reason to look at line movement, injuries and travel, not a reason to fire.

The verdict

What happens next

  1. Ignore the heartbreak narrative

After a 1-3 point loss teams won 48.0% next time against a priced 49.0%. The market has already priced the coin flip, so do not pay extra for revenge.

  2. Fade the home bounce-back

Narrow losers at home next week covered just 46.5% with a −10.9% spread return. If you are tempted by that spot, demand a better number first.

  3. Respect the road dog

Narrow losers on the road covered 52.4%, and as underdogs 51.3%. Treat that as a small lean that still needs support from injuries, weather or line movement.

Questions bettors ask

Do NFL teams bounce back after losing by a field goal?

Not reliably. After a 1-3 point loss they won 48.0% of 1,534 next games, close to the 49.9% average for all next games.

Do NFL teams cover the spread after a close loss?

Roughly half the time. They covered 49.3% of 1,480 decided spreads, and backing them all at −110 returned −5.6%.

Is there a hangover after a close NFL win?

Against the spread it looks soft but not significant. Teams coming off a 1-3 point win covered 48.2%, the lowest bucket, yet won 50.6% straight up against a priced 50.7%.
