After a 1-1 or 2-2 Draw: Which Score Comes Next Game?
Draws feel contagious, as if a 1-1 side carries that rhythm into the next match. Across 57,250 follow-up games, the prices had already captured it.
When a club draws 1-1 or 2-2, how often is its next league game drawn, with which draw score, and how many goals does it hold?
League matches in 22 European divisions 2000/01-2025/26 (183,724 matches) and 16 leagues outside Europe 2012-2024 (53,924 matches); each club's game linked to its next league game of the same season
- 126.7%Next game drawn after a 1-1
- 226.7%Price-matched expected draw rate
- 312.4%Next game 1-1 again
- 425.9%Next game drawn after a 2-2
A 1-1 or a 2-2 leaves a picture in the bettor's head: two sides cancelling each other out, a team that cannot hold a lead, a match that settles into a stalemate. The temptation is to carry that picture forward and back the draw again next weekend. I wanted to know whether the next game actually leans that way, and if so, towards which exact draw score.
The headline answer is flat. After a 1-1, the club's next league game was drawn 26.7% of the time, against a price-matched expectation of 26.7%. After a 2-2 it was 25.9% against 26.5%. If you want the primary-market reads I build before I ever narrow down to a scoreline, my football betting tips page is where they live. Here I am testing whether a recent draw deserves a place in that process at all.
Aftermath ยท 01Draw rates after a draw match the prices almost exactly
This dumbbell compares the draw rate the market priced in with what actually happened, split by the score of the previous game. The expected figure comes from every next game in the same league, at the same venue and in the same win-price band, so it reflects what the odds already knew.
The dots sit on top of each other. After a 1-1, actual and expected are both 26.7%, with a 95% range of ยฑ0.4 points across 57,250 games. After a 0-0 it is 27.1% against 27.0%, and after any win or defeat it is 26.4% against 26.4%. The 2-2 row is the only one with any daylight, and it points the other way: 25.9% drawn against 26.5% expected.

| Expected | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| After 1-1 (57,250 games) | 26.7% | 26.7% | ยฑ0.4 |
| After 2-2 (23,881 games) | 26.5% | 25.9% | ยฑ0.6 |
| After 0-0 (36,828 games) | 27.0% | 27.1% | ยฑ0.5 |
| After a win or defeat (338,993 games) | 26.4% | 26.4% | ยฑ0.1 |
My takeaway is blunt. A previous draw tells me nothing the price has not already absorbed. If anything, the 2-2 sides drew slightly less often than their odds implied, though that gap is too small to bet on.
Aftermath ยท 02The next draw score barely depends on the last one
This heatmap breaks the next game's draws into exact scores. This is where I spend my working life, because a draw at 1-1 and a draw at 0-0 tell two completely different stories about how a match unfolded.
After a 1-1, the next game finished 0-0 8.0%, 1-1 12.4%, 2-2 5.1% and 3-3+ 1.1%. Compare that with the baseline after a win or defeat: 7.8%, 12.3% and 5.2%. After a 2-2, the 0-0 share drops to 7.4%, while after a 0-0 it climbs to 8.6%. That is the only faint echo in the grid, and it tracks the scoring profile of the clubs involved rather than any memory of the last match.
View the data: which draw comes next? next-game draw scores
| 0-0 | 1-1 | 2-2 | 3-3+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| After 1-1 | 8.0% | 12.4% | 5.1% | 1.1% |
| After 2-2 | 7.4% | 12.0% | 5.3% | 1.2% |
| After 0-0 | 8.6% | 12.6% | 5.0% | 0.9% |
| After a win or defeat | 7.8% | 12.3% | 5.2% | 1.1% |
Across every row, 1-1 is the most common draw score, sitting between 12.0% and 12.6%. When I want a draw scoreline, 1-1 stays my default regardless of what happened last weekend.
Aftermath ยท 03Goal totals tilt slightly with the previous scoreline
Before I pick a scoreline, I want the goal-band picture. This stacked chart shows how next games split between 0-1, 2, 3 and 4+ total goals.
There is a mild lean here. After a 2-2, the next game had 4 or more goals 28.5% of the time and 0 or 1 goals only 25.1%. After a 0-0 the pattern flips, with 0-1 goals at 27.9% and 4+ at 25.8%. The 1-1 row sits close to the win-or-defeat baseline: 26.6% low and 27.2% high, against 26.0% and 27.7%.
View the data: total goals in the next game
| 0-1 goals | 2 goals | 3 goals | 4+ goals | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| After 1-1 | 26.6% | 24.7% | 21.5% | 27.2% |
| After 2-2 | 25.1% | 24.1% | 22.3% | 28.5% |
| After 0-0 | 27.8% | 24.9% | 21.5% | 25.8% |
| After a win or defeat | 26.0% | 24.6% | 21.7% | 27.7% |
I read this as team identity rather than momentum. Sides that ship and score goals keep doing it, and sides that grind out 0-0s keep grinding. These samples are not price-matched, so I treat the lean as context for my unders or overs call, not as an edge in itself.
Aftermath ยท 04Repeating the same draw score offers no hidden value
This table answers the bet that tempts people most: the identical score again. A 1-1 straight after a 1-1 came in 12.4% of the time, exactly as expected, for fair odds of 8.06. A 2-2 after a 2-2 landed 5.3% against 5.2% expected, with fair odds of 18.87.
Set those against the baseline. A 1-1 after a win or defeat came in 12.3%, fair odds 8.13, and a 2-2 came in 5.2%, fair odds 19.23. The repeat scores are priced like every other game.
| Next-game score | Games | Actual | Expected | Fair odds | Gap (pts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1 again after 1-1 | 57,250 | 12.4% | 12.4% | 8.06 | 0.0 |
| 2-2 again after 2-2 | 23,881 | 5.3% | 5.2% | 18.87 | +0.1 |
| 1-1 after a win or defeat | 338,993 | 12.3% | 12.3% | 8.13 | 0.0 |
| 2-2 after a win or defeat | 338,993 | 5.2% | 5.2% | 19.23 | 0.0 |
The main caveat applies throughout: these are patterns in past results, not a system, and gaps this small sit well inside the normal range of noise. Anything priced shorter than those fair odds is the bookmaker's margin at work, not a sign that the result is more likely.
What happens next
- Ignore the draw hangover
After a 1-1 the next game was drawn 26.7% of the time against 26.7% expected, so do not shade your draw price because of last weekend. Start from the matchup and the market.
- Default to 1-1
Whatever the previous score, 1-1 was the most frequent next-game draw, landing 12.4% after a 1-1 and 12.3% after a win or defeat. If your primary read says draw, 1-1 is the natural correct score.
- Check fair odds first
A repeat 1-1 carries fair odds of 8.06 and a repeat 2-2 sits at 18.87. Only consider either when the offered price clearly beats those numbers.
Questions bettors ask
Is a team more likely to draw after a 1-1?
No. Across 57,250 games, the next league game was drawn 26.7% of the time after a 1-1, identical to the price-matched expectation of 26.7%.
What are the fair odds on the same 1-1 score again next game?
A 1-1 followed a 1-1 12.4% of the time, which works out to fair odds of 8.06 with no margin. That matches the 12.4% expected from the prices.
Do games after a 2-2 have more goals?
Slightly. After a 2-2, the next game had 4 or more goals 28.5% of the time, against 27.7% after a win or defeat, which points to team style rather than a reliable betting edge.
